Charleston Stage Staff Tours Dock Street

Last Friday Christopher Parham,  The City of Charleston’s Dock Street Theatre Manager took our staff on a tour of the Dock Street.  It’s looking great with a completion date of sometime next spring in time for Spoleto.   Charleston Stage will return on September 2, 2010 for our first show of our 33rd Season.

The exterior is almost complete, with the newly renovated Portico which features two new lobby windows.  The lobby is also more spacious and now spills via a new ramp into the gallery which now serves as a box office area.

The courtyard is also larger with some offices and storage spaces having been removed.  Landscaping will be added soon.

The new stage is almost finished with a new floor coming in last week.

Inside the beautiful cypress woodwork refinishing is almost complete and is lighter and more stunning than before.   Soon all the dust from construction will be removed and the curtains and seats will start to reappear—and yes they promise us they will be more comfortatable!

Also adding to comfort will be 3 elevators making the entire building handicapped accessible and  the new and expanded restrooms are almost complete as well.

Public spaces such as the renovated Drawing Room and expanded Tap Room are taking shape with their beautiful moldings and mantels carefully restored.

Hats off to the City of Charleston, Evans and Schmidt Architechs and  NBS contractors who have kept this $20 million dollar project on schedule and have ensured the character of the Historic Dock Street is only enhanced.

We can’t wait to get back!
