Season Auditions FAQs

1. Who may audition?
Actors, Singers, Dancers are invited to audition. Auditions are for Adults and High School students only. High School Students must be in the ninth grade or higher for the 2009-2010 school year. There are no auditions for students younger than high school. These roles will be filled from our performance troupes.

2. Don’t you just use the same people every year?
Charleston Stage welcomes new performers. This past season many were new to Charleston Stage.

3. What if I don’t sing?
Come to the auditions for non –musicals, no singing required.

4. What if I can sing but not dance?
Come to the musical auditions and just try the dance portions. Not all roles in musicals demand a lot of dance.

5. How do I pick a monologue?
Find anything that appeals to you. You can look in monologue books or online or in plays you may know. The most important thing is what you do with it after you select it. First, memorize, and then spend time adding movement and meaning.

6. Can it be longer than a minute?
We prefer auditions a minute or under. You may be cut off if you go overtime.

7. Where do I find sheet music?
Look for piano sheet music online. There are several good sites, including musicnotes.com or sheetmusicplus.com.

8. Can I sing a cappella if I don’t have any sheet music?
We prefer that you bring sheet music. We have someone to play for you, and it will be easier for you and give us a better chance to evaluate your skills.

9. How do I know what shows I should audition for?
You need to see what shows you are available for first. Check all the dates for rehearsals and performances. You can ask to be considered for all the shows or just one or two.

10. What if I want to be in musicals and non-musicals?
See scheduled audition dates and times for musicals/non-musicals.

11. What should I wear?
If you are attending the musical/dance audition you should dress in comfortable clothes that you can move in. No jeans or short tight clothes. Wear character shoes or jazz shoes or sneakers if you have them, otherwise wear sneakers. If you own tap shoes, bring them.

12. Do all the good roles go to your resident professionals actors?
First, we think all roles are good roles but we will have 6 Professional Resident Actors and over 100 roles next season and obviously they can't play them all, not even all the lead roles. Many locals had great roles (remember they're all great) this past season. Some roles are assigned to our professional actors before seasonal auditions but those are noted on the roles available page.

13. Will I be paid?
All actors in Charleston Stage productions receive a stipend for their performance. Stipends are based on the size of the role.
