Memminger AuditoriumReopening After a $6 Million Renovation
Once one of Charleston’s premier performing arts venues, Memminger Auditorium, returns to operation this year following a $6 million state-of-the-art renovation, spearheaded by Spoleto Festival USA. Memminger Auditorium will reopen in May 2008 with at Spoleto Festival USA’s production of the opera Armistad. Renovations include new comfortable seats, state-of-the-art lighting, an elevator, full handicapped accessibility, and new restrooms. Memminger will also feature an elegant outdoor garden lobby ajacent to the theatre. Charleston Stage will be returning home to Memminger, for we produced many of our school perfomrances at Memminger before Hurricane Hugo blew off the roof in 1989. Memminger features a flexible seating system which can be re-arranged each year. For the Charleton Stage 2008-9 season, there will be 453 seats arranged much like they were in the Dock Street Theatre. There will be a center, right and left orchestra sections and balcony seating. Note that this is a different seating configuation from the one Spoleto is using for Armistad. (See seating chart) Charleston Stage would like to salute Spoleto Festival USA, the City of Charleston and The Charleston County School District for bringing this great venue back to life and making it available to Charleston Stage for the 2008-9 season.
