Who We Are

A Professional Company With Deep Local Roots

Charleston Stage was founded in 1978 by Julian Wiles, a native Charlestonian who believed the Lowcountry deserved theatre of the highest caliber. What began as a small company staging A Christmas Carol has grown into South Carolina's largest professional theatre company, presenting a full MainStage season and a Family Series every year on the historic Dock Street stage.

Today we produce more than 100 performances a season, welcome more than 55,000 patrons and students each year, and train the next generation of theatre artists through one of the region's most respected education programs. Every production is made here, by a resident company of professional actors, designers, and educators who call Charleston home.

Great theatre should feel like it belongs to the whole city, not just the people already in the seats. The Charleston Stage Mission

As a nonprofit, we exist to entertain, to educate, and to bring the community together. From opening night galas to school matinees, our stage is a gathering place for the Lowcountry.

Our Home

The Historic Dock Street Theatre

We perform in the first building in America designed solely for theatrical performances. Its story is nearly three centuries long.

1736

America's First Theatre Opens

On February 12, 1736, the Dock Street Theatre opened with a performance of The Recruiting Officer, becoming the first building in America built purely for the stage. Flora, the first opera performed in America, soon followed here.

1809

The Planters Hotel

After the original theatre was lost, the Planters Hotel rose on the site. Its now-iconic wrought-iron balcony and sandstone columns were added in 1835, a Charleston landmark that still frames Church Street today.

1937

Reborn as a Theatre

During the Great Depression, a WPA project rebuilt a working theatre inside the shell of the old hotel. The Historic Dock Street Theatre celebrated its second grand opening on November 26, 1937.

1978

The Company Is Born

Julian Wiles founded the Young Charleston Theatre Company and staged its very first production, A Christmas Carol, which remains the company's best-loved holiday tradition to this day. The company was later renamed Charleston Stage.

2010

A Landmark Restored

Following a three-year, $19 million renovation by the City of Charleston, the theatre reopened with modern stagecraft while preserving its historic character. It remains Charleston Stage's home.
