CHARLESTON STAGE AUDITIONS

Charleston Stage’s annual auditions are for members of the community interested in performing with Charleston Stage. Auditions are open to adults and high school students (rising Grades 9-12). While Charleston Stage has a Resident Acting Company and employs guest actors, community actors make up a large portion of our acting company each season, playing leading, as well as, supporting roles. Newcomers are welcome!

monologues for “purlie victorious” AUDITION:

We ask that anyone interested in being considered for Purlie Victorious learn one of the following monologues. These are not from Purlie Victorious, but work better as monologues. These are both selections from Chicken & Biscuits by Douglas Lyons. Please read the suggestions written at the top and it is better to have these memorized to showcase your skill.

Vocal Audition Instructions:

1.
Everyone wishing to audition for Fiddler On The Roof and/or A Christmas Carol will perform one of the provided cuttings from Fiddler along with the provided accompaniment track. Options: Tevye “If I Were A Rich Man” full song; Soprano/Alto “Sunrise, Sunset” cutting; and Tenor/Baritone “To Life” cutting

2.  You may choose whichever cutting and vocal part best fits your vocal range (soprano, alto, tenor or bass), but please sing the same part throughout (don’t jump around between soprano and alto for example). An accompaniment track, guide vocal track, and piano track playing each individual part are provided via the website (no piano track provided for “If I Were A Rich Man”).

3.  The style for these shows is golden age musical theatre with a somewhat contemporary approach. Think “Little Women”, “Mary Poppins”, etc. Please sing with appropriate vocal qualities and stylizations: clear music theatre mixed sounds, crisp but not artificial diction, natural sounding vibrato, etc.

RESIDENT ACTOR PROGRAM

Charleston Stage is South Carolina's largest professional non-union theatre. Our Resident Actor Program is an intensive 12-month program that allows its participants to combine multiple performance opportunities with a well-structured and practical teacher training program. Our company is in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre and presents a Main Stage series of six full productions as well as a Family Series of two to three productions each season.  In addition, our CityStage program and other educational outreach programs provide opportunities for artists to engage with the community through theatre performance and education.

Casting for our 2024-25 Resident Acting Company has been completed. Please check back in December 2024 for more information about auditions for our 2025-26 Season.
