Charleston Stage, now celebrating its 40th Anniversary, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, South Carolina, produces 6 MainStage productions and 3 Family Series shows each season. Charleston Stage has a major commitment to education reaching over 18,000 students annually through classes, apprenticeships, summer camps, and school matinees. Charleston Stage’s operational budget is $2.4 million and operates with a full-time staff of 25.

 

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR – Charleston Stage, South Carolina’s largest resident professional theatre, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, seeks an experienced Technical Director to supervise all aspects of lighting, sound, set design and construction, and coordinating necessary maintenance.  This is a full time, year round position that directly supports a nine show MainStage and Family Series. The ideal candidate must be well-organized, a communicative professional with strong budgeting and organizational skills, experienced in managing the build of multiple shows, and an able to work successfully with designers and directors to successfully achieve their vision. Duties include but are not limited to the daily supervision of staff and over-hire personnel and maintenance of budget. Proficiency in wood and metal scenic construction and other fabrication techniques, experience in scenic engineering and rigging, and computer drafting proficiency in Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or similar rendering software are a must as well as knowledge of industry and OSHA safety standards and practices.  The ideal candidate will poses a Bachelors of Arts or Master’s Degree in Technical Theatre and/or significant of experience working in technical theatre in the regional theatre arena. Competitive benefits package includes health, dental and 401K plans. ASSISTANT TECHNICAL DIRECTOR/RESIDENT LIGHTING DESIGNER - Charleston Stage, South Carolina’s largest resident professional theatre, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, seeks an Assistant Technical Director/Resident Lighting Designer to join our production department. The ideal candidate will assist and collaborate with our Technical Director on all elements of the production department but more specifically our scenic department.  The ideal candidate must be well-organized, a communicative professional with strong budgeting and organizational skills and experienced in managing the build of multiple shows. Duties include but are not limited to the daily supervision of staff and over-hire personnel and maintenance of budget as well as hands on participation in the building of all scenic elements.  The ideal candidate will double as the company’s Resident Lighting Designer.  As such he/she would adapt our house plot for every production to insure the best artistic outcome/design.   Proficiency in wood and metal scenic construction and other fabrication techniques, experience in scenic engineering and rigging, lighting design and electrics, and computer drafting proficiency in Vectorworks, AutoCAD, or similar rendering software,  Proficiency with Lightwright is also required.  Candidate must have a knowledge of industry and OSHA safety standards and practices.  The ideal candidate must excel at meeting deadlines, be dependable, flexible, self-motivated and have excellent communication skills. CARPENTER - Charleston Stage, South Carolina’s largest resident professional theatre, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, seeks an experienced Carpenter to join our team. The ideal candidate should possess experience in all aspects of scenery construction and in-depth knowledge of shop tools as well as the ability to solve problems and to work independently. Metal working/welding skills a plus. Ability to read plans a must.  Additional duties include loading, installation and strike of all shows and assisting in general maintenance of facilities and equipment. Candidate must be a good team player willing to assist other departments if and when needed.  Positive attitude is essential. PROPERTIES MASTER – Charleston Stage, South Carolina’s largest resident professional theatre, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, seeks a Property Master.  The ideal candidate must be well-organized, and communicative professional with strong budgeting and organizational skills, experience managing the build of multiple shows, and an ability to work with designers to successfully achieve their vision. Responsibilities include but are not limited to acquisition and/or building of all hand and scenic props including but not limited to furniture, set dressing, weaponry and consumables. Computer skills are essential; ability to paint and basic sewing skills are a plus; carpentry skills are a must.  Those applying must have a valid driver's license, be able to routinely lift at least 30—50 pounds and do ladder work. COSTUME SHOP MANAGER – Charleston Stage, South Carolina’s largest resident professional theatre, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, seeks an experienced Costume Shop Manager to supervise all aspects of active costume department. The successful candidate must be well-organized, and communicative professional with strong budgeting and organizational skills, experience managing the build of multiple shows, and an ability to work with designers to successfully achieve their vision. This is a full time, year round position that directly supports a nine show MainStage and Family Series. Duties include the daily supervision of staff and over-hire personnel, maintenance of budget, coordination of costume rentals, collaboration with designers and choreographers, create wardrobe plots and oversee the maintenance of costumes during performance runs. While this is primarily a management position, the Costume Shop Manager will also have costume build and maintenance responsibilities and should have draping, patterning, and construction skills. WARDROBE SUPERVISOR - Charleston Stage, South Carolina’s largest resident professional theatre, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, seeks an experienced Wardrobe Supervisor to insure smoothly-run performances as well as preserving the integrity of the original costume design for each production.  Responsibilities include organizing and assisting in all fittings; generating all running sheets and costume plots; coordinating, as well as conducting, all costume changes; training of all dressers; costume maintenance and repairs; and organizing strike.  This position requires extensive knowledge of clothing as well as AEA theatrical practices. Additional duties will include working in the costume shop, for which requirements include strong stitching skills.  The ideal candidate must excel at meeting deadlines, be dependable, flexible, self-motivated and have excellent communication skills. Strong organizational and computer skills are a must.  Basic wig maintenance is required.  Positive attitude is essential. CUTTER/DRAPER - Charleston Stage, South Carolina’s largest resident professional theatre, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, seeks Charleston Stage, South Carolina’s largest resident professional theatre, in residence at the Historic Dock Street Theatre, seeks an experienced an experienced Cutter/Draper to join our production department.  Applicants must have practical experience as a Cutter/Draper and professional costume construction experience in a professional theatre.  Responsibilities include patterns and supervises/participates in the construction of all costumes, fittings and oversees alterations and reworking of all built, rented or pulled costumes.   Candidates must show proficiency in draping, flat patterning and “sculptural” use of fabric.  Expertise in creating period, modern and unusual costumes desired. Other requirements include excellent understanding of fabric types, characteristics, uses and limitations as well as working knowledge of costume history.  The ideal candidate must excel at meeting deadlines, be dependable, flexible, self-motivated and have excellent communication skills.
