Theatre Beyond Our Walls

CityStage, Charleston Stage's community engagement team, is made up of members of our Resident Acting Company. The goal is to expand the work and mission of Charleston Stage beyond the walls of the Dock Street Theatre. The team focuses on building partnerships with schools, religious groups, and community organizations in the Charleston area, especially in underserved communities. We strive to become true community partners, not only to share our work, but to provide support and professional theatre resources to the important work schools and community groups are already doing.

Build lasting partnerships and relationships with leaders and community groups in Charleston.
Understand community needs and how, over time, we can provide support and resources to our partners.
Encourage partners and those we serve to become more engaged with Charleston Stage's productions, education, and outreach programs.
Identify new programming that will better serve the worlds of our community partners.
Broaden community engagement and representation from all areas of our community.

Programming

Inclusion & Outreach

Community Tour: imaginative productions created by the CityStage Team bring Charleston Stage programming directly into underserved communities and schools, playing to hundreds of Lowcountry youth and families across the tri-county area.
Community Engagement: working with area houses of worship, schools, and community groups to develop enriching partnerships, classes, and performance opportunities.
Enriching In-School Workshops: essential in-school workshops designed to expand arts programming across the greater Charleston area.
High School Partnerships: CityStage members support high school drama teachers with their classes and productions, and help recruit for the free TheatreWings High School Apprentice Program.
Outreach Afterschool Classes: CityStage teachers lead acting workshops in area afterschool programs for students in grades K–5.
TheatreSchool Scholarships: we offer TheatreSchool scholarships at multiple levels.
