A Few Fun Things to Know

Jo Was Really Louisa

Louisa May Alcott published Little Women in 1868 and modeled the headstrong, ambitious Jo on herself, a writer who refused to be told what a woman could become.

The Number You'll Remember

When the musical opened on Broadway in 2005, Sutton Foster stopped the show as Jo with the soaring anthem "Astonishing," earning a Tony nomination in the process.

Jo Was Never Meant for Laurie

Readers begged Louisa May Alcott to marry Jo off to Laurie. She refused, declaring she would not pair them just to please her fans, and created Professor Bhaer instead.
