AUDITION PREP WORKSHOP

Audition Prep Workshop is a 2 hour workshop that is geared towards preparing students for the School of the Arts theatre audition. Students should come to the workshop with a monologue already chosen and memorized. We will work the monologue as well as cover the other sections of the SOA audition so students feel prepared and confident for their audition. This workshop is for students 5th grade and up. Students do NOT need to sign up for both sessions.

 

 

9th-12th Grade Musical Theatre

Welcome to the 9th-12th Grade Musical Theatre class! This dynamic and immersive course is designed to provide high school students with a comprehensive exploration of the exciting world of musical theatre. Whether you're a seasoned performer or new to the stage, this class offers a supportive and engaging environment for students to develop their singing, dancing, and acting abilities while exploring the unique challenges and joys of musical theatre.

Course Objectives:

  1. Triple Threat Training: Students will receive comprehensive training in the three core disciplines of musical theatre: singing, dancing, and acting. Through vocal exercises, students will develop proper vocal techniques, expand their vocal range, and learn to interpret songs with emotion and storytelling. They will also explore various dance styles commonly found in musical theatre, focusing on coordination, flexibility, and mastering choreography. Additionally, students will hone their acting skills to portray characters authentically and effectively on stage.
  2. Song and Dance Performance: Students will work on ensemble numbers and solo performances, learning how to captivate an audience through the integration of song and dance. They will learn the importance of storytelling within musical numbers, using vocal and physical expression to convey emotion and advance the plot. Students will also study iconic musical theatre repertoire, discovering different styles and eras of musical theatre while developing their own unique performance style.
  3. Audition Preparation: Students will gain valuable insights and practical experience in preparing for musical theatre auditions. They will learn how to select appropriate audition material, build a repertoire book, and deliver confident and memorable auditions. Through mock auditions and feedback sessions, students will refine their audition skills and receive guidance on presenting their best selves to casting directors.
  4. Acting through Song: In musical theatre, songs serve as a vehicle for character development and emotional expression. Students will delve into the art of "acting through song," exploring techniques to interpret lyrics, connect with the character's motivations, and convey truthful emotions in their performances. They will also explore the importance of vocal storytelling, phrasing, and dynamics to enhance their performances and engage the audience.
  5. Performance Opportunities: Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents. They will work collaboratively with their classmates and teachers to bring their material to life. These performance opportunities will allow students to apply the skills they have learned and experience the exhilaration of performing in front of an audience. This class will perform as part of Playfest in April 2024. Specific schedule TBD.
 
Class Requirements:

  • No previous musical theatre experience is required, but a basic understanding of singing, dancing, or acting is beneficial.
  • Willingness to actively participate in class activities, exercises, and performances.
  • Openness to trying new techniques and taking creative risks.
  • Respect for classmates' ideas, perspectives, and performances.
  • Willingness to engage in self-reflection and constructive feedback.

By the end of this course, students will have developed a well-rounded skill set in singing, dancing, and acting, specifically tailored to the unique demands of musical theatre. They will have gained confidence in performing on stage, a deeper appreciation for the art of musical theatre, and a strong foundation to pursue further studies or pursue opportunities in the world of musical theatre. 9th-12th Grade Acting

 
Welcome to the 9th-12th Grade Acting Class! This immersive and engaging course is designed to provide high school students with a comprehensive introduction to the art of acting. Whether you're a seasoned performer or new to the stage, this class offers a supportive and dynamic environment for students to explore their creativity, develop their acting skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the theatrical craft.

Course Objectives:

  1. Develop Acting Techniques: Students will learn a range of acting techniques, including improvisation, character development, voice projection, stage movement, and emotional expression. Through various exercises and activities, they will develop a strong foundation in acting skills that will enhance their stage presence and performance abilities.
  2. Scene Study and Monologues: Students will delve into scene study, analyzing scripts, and exploring the complexities of character relationships. They will learn how to bring characters to life by understanding their motivations, objectives, and conflicts. Additionally, students will work on monologues, honing their individual performance skills and gaining confidence in delivering powerful and engaging solo performances.
  3. Collaboration and Ensemble Work: Acting is a collaborative art form, and students will learn the importance of teamwork and ensemble work. They will participate in group activities, ensemble scenes, and improvisational exercises, fostering a spirit of cooperation, trust, and creativity among classmates. Through collaborative projects, students will develop their ability to listen, respond, and work together effectively on stage.
  4. Performance Opportunities: Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents in front of their peers, teachers, and potentially even a wider audience. They will work towards a final playfest performance, which may include scenesmonologues, or improvisation. This performance will serve as a culmination of their learning experience and allow them to apply the skills they have acquired. This class will perform as part of Playfest in April 2024.   5. Theater Appreciation: In addition to practical acting skills, students will develop an appreciation for theater as an art form. They will explore the history of theater, study influential playwrights and theater practitioners, and analyze notable productions. Through discussions and research, students will gain a deeper understanding of the broader theatrical landscape and develop critical thinking skills.
