introduction to playwriting

What makes a story… a story? How does an idea begin, and suddenly find itself brought to life on the stage? Moreover, how does the writer communicate their ideas clearly, in order to promote effective collaboration with actors, directors, and other creatives? In this collaborative storytelling course, published playwright Caedon Venné breaks down playwriting into its most fundamental pieces. By the end of the course, the students will not only have written their own short plays, but they will leave with a fundamental understanding of how great stories are told.

6th–8th grade acting
mondays or wednesdays
This class gives middle school students the tools to take their acting to the next level. Through monologues, scene study, and improvisation, students will explore how to create dynamic characters, make strong choices on stage, and collaborate as an ensemble. Designed for young actors who are ready to stretch their skills, this class builds confidence, discipline, and creativity in a supportive environment.
Learning Objectives:
- Strengthen acting techniques using body, voice, and imagination
- Learn script analysis skills to understand character motivation and story arc
- Develop believable characters through monologues and scene work
- Practice memorization strategies and rehearsal techniques
- Improve vocal clarity, projection, and expressive delivery
- Explore improvisation to enhance creativity and quick thinking
- Build ensemble skills, collaboration, and respect for theatre etiquette
- Gain confidence performing for peers and audiences
6th–8th grade musical theatre
Tuesdays or thursdays
This class is designed for middle school students who want to develop their skills as musical theatre performers. Students will explore acting, singing, and movement through scene work, songs, and choreography, learning how to integrate all three elements to create dynamic, confident performances. This class helps students build stage presence, teamwork, and a strong foundation for future musical theatre opportunities.
Learning Objectives:
- Strengthen acting, singing, and movement skills in musical theatre contexts
- Develop character interpretation and storytelling through song and scene work
- Improve vocal technique, projection, and expressive delivery in performance
- Learn choreography and musical timing to enhance ensemble and solo performances
- Practice memorization and rehearsal techniques for songs and scenes
- Build confidence performing for peers and audiences
- Foster collaboration, teamwork, and professionalism on stage
- Apply theatre etiquette and stage presence in all performance activities
