AUDITION PREP WORKSHOP

Audition Prep Workshop is a 2 hour workshop that is geared towards preparing students for the School of the Arts theatre audition. Students should come to the workshop with a monologue already chosen and memorized. We will work the monologue as well as cover the other sections of the SOA audition so students feel prepared and confident for their audition. This workshop is for students 5th grade and up. Students do NOT need to sign up for both sessions.

 

 

6th-8th Grade Musical Theatre

Welcome to the 6th-8th Grade Musical Theatre class! This engaging and lively course is designed to introduce middle school students to the magical world of musical theatre. Whether you have previous experience or are new to the stage, this class offers a supportive and fun-filled environment for students to explore their singing, dancing, and acting abilities while experiencing the joy of musical theatre.

Course Objectives:

  1. Introduction to Musical Theatre: Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of musical theatre, exploring the unique aspects that combine singing, dancing, and acting. Through interactive activities and games, they will learn basic terminology, techniques, and the history of musical theatre. Students will gain an understanding of the collaborative nature of musical theatre and the importance of teamwork in creating a successful production.
  2. Vocal Development: Students will receive vocal training to develop their singing abilities and build confidence in their voices. They will learn proper breathing techniques, vocal warm-ups, and exercises to improve pitch, tone, and projection. Through group singing and solo performances, students will explore various musical styles and learn to express emotions through their voices.
  3. Dance and Movement: Students will explore the fundamental principles of dance as it applies to musical theatre. They will learn basic dance techniques, coordination, and body awareness. Through choreographed routines and movement exercises, students will develop their skills in musical theatre dance styles, such as jazz and Broadway-style choreography. Dance routines will be integrated into musical numbers to enhance storytelling and stage presence.
  4. Acting and Character Development: Students will explore the art of acting and character development within the context of musical theatre. They will learn techniques to bring characters to life, express emotions authentically, and develop stage presence. Through improvisation, scripted scenes, and ensemble work, students will learn how to portray characters with confidence, creativity, and believability.
  5. Performance Opportunities: Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents. They will work collaboratively with their classmates and teachers to bring the material to life. These performance opportunities will allow students to apply the skills they have learned and experience the thrill of performing on stage. This class will perform as part of Playfest in April 2024. Class Requirements:

  • No previous musical theatre experience is required.
  • Willingness to actively participate in class activities, exercises, and performances.
  • Openness to trying new techniques and taking creative risks.
  • Respect for classmates' ideas, perspectives, and performances.
  • Willingness to engage in self-reflection and constructive feedback.

By the end of this course, students will have developed a solid foundation in singing, dancing, and acting for musical theatre. They will have gained confidence in performing on stage, an appreciation for the collaborative nature of musical theatre, and a love for the magic of the art form. This course will ignite their passion for musical theatre and serve as a stepping stone for further exploration and growth in the performing arts. 6th-8th Grade Acting

 
Welcome to the 6th-8th Grade Acting class! This engaging and immersive course is designed to introduce middle school students to the art of acting and help them develop a strong foundation in acting techniques. Whether you have prior acting experience or are new to the stage, this class provides a supportive and creative environment for students to explore their imagination, express themselves, and build confidence as performers.

Course Objectives:

  1. Acting Fundamentals: Students will learn the basic principles of acting, including stage presence, vocal projection, body language, and emotional expression. Through various theater exercises and improvisational activities, they will develop a strong understanding of these fundamental acting skills. Students will also learn the importance of active listening, reacting in the moment, and working collaboratively with scene partners.
  2. Character Development: Students will dive into the exciting world of character development. They will learn how to analyze a character, understand their motivations, and bring them to life on stage. Through script analysis, improvisation, and scene work, students will explore different character archetypes, experiment with physicality and vocal choices, and deepen their understanding of character relationships and objectives.
  3. Scene Study: Students will engage in scene study, where they will work on scripted scenes with their classmates. They will learn how to analyze a scene, understand the dramatic structure, and explore different acting choices to effectively communicate the intentions of the playwright. Through scene work, students will enhance their listening skills, learn the importance of ensemble work, and develop the ability to create believable and engaging performances.
  4. Improvisation: Improvisation is a vital skill for actors. Students will participate in improvisational exercises and games to stimulate their creativity, enhance their spontaneity, and improve their ability to think on their feet. They will learn to trust their instincts, collaborate with others, and embrace the unexpected. Improvisation will also help students develop confidence in their choices and strengthen their overall acting skills.
  5. Performance Opportunities: Throughout the course, students will have the opportunity to showcase their acting skills in class presentations, and scene performances These performance opportunities will allow students to apply what they have learned, gain valuable stage experience, and share their talents with their peers and potentially a wider audience. This class will perform as part of Playfest in April 2024. Specific schedule TBD.
